Kawulicz named interim dean of students

With Nancy Hasenauer retiring after 18 years as dean of students at Middlebrook School, the Wilton Public School District has selected Brookfield resident Toby Kawulicz to serve as interim dean.

“I am very excited to come to Middlebrook and to Wilton Public Schools,” Kawulicz told The Bulletin. “The staff has been so warm and welcoming throughout the interview process.”

Kawulicz, who begins her new role July 1, said she believes her philosophy toward education resembles Middlebrook's Five Beliefs:

  • We treat others as we want to be treated.

  • We accept honesty as our only policy.

  • We take pride in our work and in our school.

  • We are responsible for our actions.

  • We have a right to a safe and orderly environment.

Kawulicz has worked at Ridgefield Public Schools for 16 years, serving as school counselor at both the middle and high school levels. Prior to that, she served as a substance abuse counselor and an employee assistance counselor.

In her recent position at East Ridge Middle School, Kawulicz has had numerous leadership roles, including interim assistant principal, advisory program developer, school climate coordinator, Peer Leadership Program advisor, and TEAM mentor.

“Although leaving Ridgefield after many years is difficult, I am excited to embark on a new professional adventure,” said Kawulicz, who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Notre Dame, a master of education from Boston University, and a sixth year certificate in educational leadership from the University of Connecticut.

“I look forward to meeting the students, staff and families of Middlebrook,” said Kawulicz, who was selected out of more than 100 candidates for the interim dean position.

According to the Wilton school district’s May 20 News From the Schools newsletter, Kawulicz “impressed the committee with her knowledge of students’ social emotional needs, her ability to build rapport and a sense of community, and her understanding of instruction and trends in education."
