Good-bye to summer, hello to classrooms

In three days, students say good-bye to lazy summer days and long summer nights, and hello to textbooks, teachers and classrooms.

Wilton public schools will open their doors Monday, Aug. 25. This is what Wilton’s new superintendent, Dr. Kevin Smith, has been looking forward to.

For the first day of the new school year, Dr. Smith told The Bulletin, he expects the buses to run on time and everything to go “very smoothly.”

“I’m expecting that our schools will be very happy places with lots and lots of adults eagerly and warmly welcoming kids back and setting them up for a really exciting school year,” said Dr. Smith.

On Aug. 25, classes officially begin at 9:05 a.m. for Miller-Driscoll students, with drop-off lines ending at 9; 7:40 for Cider Mill, 8:20 for Middlebrook and 8:10 for high school students.

Homeroom and locker checks for high school freshmen will take place at 8:20, followed by a welcome back breakfast at the student center for seniors at 9:45, and homeroom/advisory for all students at 10:20.

Student enrollment

The Wilton Public School District’s October 2013 projections estimate that the following number of students will attend each of the four schools this year:

  • Miller-Driscoll: 888.
  • Cider Mill: 974.
  • Middlebrook: 1,064.
  • Wilton High: 1,373.

The complete count of enrolled students this year will not be available until fall. The district uses Oct. 1 as the official enrollment date.

Staff changes

Miller-Driscoll will see some changes in staff this school year:

  • Heather Evart will teach kindergarten in place of Kelly McGee, who is taking a one-year leave of absence.
  • Jaclyn Sheridan will teach Andrea Packard’s first grade class from August to November while Ms. Packard is on maternity leave.

Prior to the first day of school, Wilton High School will have its student orientation programs on Friday, Aug. 22.

Miller-Driscoll will host a meeting for this year’s room reps in the North Cafeteria on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 9:30.

Cider Mill will host a coffee event with Principal Jennifer Mitchell in the cafeteria on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 9:15, and a coffee event for new parents on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 9:15.

Middlebrook will host three days of open houses this September to give parents the opportunity to learn this year’s school curriculum and meet their children’s teachers:

  • Thursday, Sept. 4: Parents of eighth graders, 7-8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 9: Parents of sixth graders, 7-8:30 p.m.
  • Monday, Sept. 15: Parents of seventh graders, 7-8 p.m.

Each open house session will start in the cafeteria, and PTA information tables will be open from 6:30 to 7.

Thursday, Aug. 28, is underclassmen picture day at the high school. Students are to report to the Zellner Gallery at their appointed check-in times before having their pictures taken in the Clune Auditorium. Make-up dates for absentees will be announced.

Board of Education

The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m., in the Wilton High School Professional Library.
