Calendars approved for next two school years

Not much will change as far as calendars go for the next two school years after the Board of Education unanimously approved the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school calendars for Wilton public schools during its May 28 meeting.
“There is only one change. We’re moving the professional learning day from Feb. 3 to Dec. 11,” said Board of Education Chair Bruce Likly.
“Dr. Smith asked that we do that to provide greater flexibility to them [the teachers].”
Likly said the 2016-17 calendar is “very much in line with the school calendar this year and the one we’ll have next year.”
“If there are changes we do need to make to the 15-16 calendar, we will revisit it,” he said, adding that “approving the 16-17 calendar now enables our families to start planning their vacations.”

Regional calendar

Last August, the Connecticut Department of Education passed legislation establishing the Uniform Regional School Calendar Task Force, which developed guidelines for each Regional Educational Service Center (RESC) to use in developing uniform regional school calendars.
According to the task force’s January 2014 final report, those guidelines include:

  • At least 180 student school days each school year.

  • A common start date.

  • Two common professional development and in-service training days for certified employees.

  • Three vacation periods — one during the summer and no more than two can be week-long.

The regional calendar — which does not regulate early release days, snow day allowances, high school graduation dates and last-day-of-school dates for students - allows district and regions five flexible days for cultural and religious observances.
Wilton’s 2015-16 school calendar is “mostly aligned with the proposed regional calendar,” Superintendent Kevin Smith said last September.
“The key difference,” he said, “is that in the proposed regional calendar, the students start school two days later than what’s proposed here [in Wilton’s 2015-16 calendar].”
