Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? contestants announced

Sixteen Cider Mill fifth graders will participate in the Wilton Education Foundation (WEF)'s fifth annual Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? fund-raiser on Friday, March 4.

Approximately 100 fifth graders took a qualifying exam to become student contestants, and the following top four scorers in each house were selected as representatives:

  • Belden Hill: Nathan Downs, Clarissa Greis, Avni Gupta and Griffin Turner.

  • Cannondale: Lucia La Orden Oro, Katherine May, James Ring and Joshua Sheng.

  • Kent: Saanvi Bathla, Charles Johnson, Anna Joy and Jack Michael.

  • Nod Hill: Vihan Jayawardhane, Lukas Koutsoukos, Henry Purcell and Alexa Steckel.

Miller-Driscoll teachers Sal Giaimo and Bryan Ennis will emcee the event, which is based on the TV show of the same name.

WEF’s version is a spirited team-based game that incorporates Wilton-specific subject matter into the trivia, utilizing the technology the organization helps to fund for the schools, such as interactive SMARTBoards and iPads, to display questions and provide responses.

The 16 fifth graders will sit on stage and assist contestants in answering questions derived from the elementary school’s curriculum.

The following fifth grade teachers will be the contestants in the fifth annual fund-raiser:

  • Frank Coomaraswamy, of Belden Hill.

  • Jason Greasley, of Cannondale.

  • Tim Gallo, of Kent.

  • Mike Hossler, of Nod Hill.

“The whole town comes together for this entertaining evening while supporting WEF and, ultimately, the Wilton Schools,” said Kimber Felton, co-chair of the event.

“This is a fun way to showcase and support the efforts of the students, the staff and the Foundation all at the same time.”

Fellow co-chair Carolyn Lyon said the event has become “one of the most popular tickets in Wilton, and people love to compete for bragging rights.”

“We’re continuing with much of what has made this event such a wonderful tradition, while adding in several new things that the public should enjoy,” said Lyon.

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? will take place at 7 p.m. in the Wilton High School Clune Center. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Parent supervision is required for students.

Premium reserved seating is available at $25 per seat, and general admission is $10 for students and $15 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at
