GREENWICH — On the last day of classes in the Greenwich Public Schools, the district reported three new COVID-19 cases, the first cases in the district since June 4.

As of Tuesday, there were three schools with active cases in the school district — Greenwich High, Parkway and Riverside — all of which originated from undetermined contact, according to data reported by the Greenwich Public Schools. The district will end the school year with a total of 697 reported cases of COVID-19 since September among teachers, students and staff.

Total cases have plummeted in the district in the last two months and, on Monday, Greenwich High celebrated with an in-person commencement ceremony for the Class of 2021 on the school’s athletic fields.

In all of June, there have been just five reported cases of COVID-19. In all of May there were just 13 cases, whereas April saw 133 cases.

The decline in COVID-19 cases in Greenwich schools mirrored the decreased number in the town and the state. Connecticut’s positivity rate has stayed below 1 percent for more than a month. Statewide hospitalizations dropped to just 33 individuals late last week, the lowest at any point during the pandemic. About 66 percent of residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

And, since lifting mask mandates, the state has seen no noticeable increase in COVID-19 transmission, hospitalizations or deaths. During the three-day stretch from Friday to Monday, there were no COVID-related deaths reported in the state.

The last day of school for Greenwich staff is Thursday, officially capping a year disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some students and staff will return July 6 for the start of summer school.
