Renters rebate deadline nears

Renters who are elderly or considered totally disabled may be eligible for a rebate of up to $900 under the state’s annual renters rebate program. The deadline for filing is Oct. 1.

Elderly applicants must have been 65 years of age by Dec. 31, 2013; have rented in Connecticut for at least one year and have income (2013) of not more than $34,100 if single and $41,600 if married. There is no age requirement for totally disabled renters; other requirements are the same as those for elderly renters.

Eligible renters who have not yet filed should visit the assessor’s office in town hall between 9 and 4, Monday through Friday. Renters must bring proof of income, including Social Security 1099 statement, rent checks, and utility bills for the year 2013. Totally disabled renters must also bring proof of disability.

Questions may be directed to Anna at 563-0121 in the assessor’s office.
