Gas pipeline construction begins

Phase 2 of the Eversource (formerly Yankee Gas) natural gas expansion was scheduled to begin Wednesday, June 17, in front of Miller-Driscoll School on Wolfpit Road. A crew will work east, ending at the intersection of Wolfpit and Horseshoe roads throughout the summer. The project is expected to be completed by Aug. 15.
Motorists can expect one lane of Wolfpit Road to be closed during construction and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained and emergency vehicles will be able to move through construction areas.
According to Eversource, the work crews will come from Danella Construction and should be able to complete about 250 feet per day. The pipeline will b e 3,100 feet long.
Construction will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The project will bring natural gas to Miller-Driscoll, the last school in Wilton to be along a natural gas pipeline. Homes and businesses along the pipeline route will be able to connect to it as well.
This project was approved by the Board of Selectmen on April 20. It will cost the town $300,000, but officials believe those costs will be recouped within five years through savings on the school’s energy bills and other costs related to heating with oil.
Phase 1 of the project extended natural gas pipelines through Wilton Center for three and one-half miles. It began in August 2014 and was completed in early November of that year, nearly a month ahead of schedule. By mid-November, the pipes were pressure-tested for leaks, and then several businesses, schools and municipal buildings were connected.
Wilton is one of the first communities in the state to partner with a gas utility through Connecticut’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy, an initiative that calls for expansion of the state’s natural gas distribution system.
