FEMA deadline for Sandy assistance nears

Wilton residents who wish to register with FEMA for disaster assistance due to Storm Sandy must do so by Dec. 31. More than $9.2 million in federal  assistance has been approved to help people cope with disaster expenses resulting from the storm.

In addition, nearly $5 million in U.S. Small Business Administration loans have been approved. The SBA is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private nonprofit organizations fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and covers the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations.

FEMA registration may be accomplished online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The TTY number is 1-800-462-7585.

There are also FEMA-State Disaster Recovery Centers applicants may visit in person.

The centers are open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and closed Sundays.
