Volunteer firefighters create safety mat

Inspired by the statistic that 17% of firefighter injuries result from non-fireground incidents, two Georgetown volunteer firefighters who work for safety impact attenuation system provider Trassig Corporation of New Milford — Hal Gourad and Matthew Billy — created the Better Fire Pole Mat.

“Many fire pole systems are equipped with only a small landing surface that provides merely a few inches of hard rubber surface,” a press release said.

The Better Fire Pole Mat has a diameter of 36 inches and is eight-inches thick. It uses the same padding relied upon by the National Football League for player safety, and is colored yellow so it can be clearly seen.

“The Better Fire Pole Mat is not only clearly visible from upper- and ground-level floors, but provides vastly improved impact attenuation. The product is truly designed by firefighters, for firefighters,” the press release said.

Gourad and Billy have pledged to donate all proceeds from sales of the Better Fire Pole Mat to local fire agencies.
