Simpaug Farms: Bringing the bounty of the season to your neighborhood
Farm fresh vegetable season is upon us and there’s still time to sign up for a community supported agriculture (CSA) share. Simpaug Farms has expanded its CSA and is welcoming new members to join in sharing the bounty of the harvest.
The farm has added a dozen pickup sites across Fairfield County, including: Ridgefield, Norwalk, New Canaan, Wilton, Stamford, Fairfield and Bridgeport. CSA members pick up a weekly assortment of seasonal vegetables, herbs, berries, melons, and eggs delivered directly from the farm.
“We have been listening to customers as we grow,” said the farm’s Sales & Marketing Manager, Megan Robertson. “The CSA is our bread and butter, so taking care of members is a top priority.”
Pickup times have been extended past 6 p.m., and members can now put their delivery on hold while away on vacation. Robertson emphasizes the level of customer service members receive.
“When you join a CSA you truly know your farmer,” she said. “All of our members have my cell phone number and I am always on call. Sometimes I even get text messages with pictures of vegetables — usually kohlrabi, asking ‘what is this one?’ or ‘how do I eat this?.’”
The farmers have also tried to include more family favorites, like melons and strawberries.
“Are you a real farm?” Robertson said that’s the latest question from potential members as more and more food aggregators come on the scene, claiming to deliver fresh farm produce.
The answer is yes. Simpaug Farms is a real farm situated on 250 acres of picturesque preserved farmland in the Connecticut River valley. All the CSA vegetables are grown using organic inputs and sustainable farming practices. Most work on the farm is done with a small crew of hardworking farmers and field hands, and a single tractor.
Early each morning the farm’s delivery van departs from the Ridgefield office and makes the trip up north to the farm in West Suffield. In the meantime, the farm crew is busy harvesting last-minute items, washing veggies, and packing crates.
When the van arrives it is quickly loaded up, often stuffed to the brim, with fresh produce bound for Fairfield County CSA members, chefs and markets.
“We are a family owned and operated business” said Robertson, “but some family members reside in Ridgefield and others are on the farm and in nearby Ellington.”
It creates a unique opportunity for the farm to deliver to customers across four Connecticut counties. The Simpaug Farms CSA had its humble beginning in Ridgefield in 2011 and has successfully grown to include many of the surrounding communities.
The summer CSA begins June 5 and continues 16 weeks, followed by an eight-week fall season closing in late November. The cost is $35 per week with the option to add eggs for $5 per dozen. Members must register online in advance for the season, and may choose a weekly or bi-weekly share.
