Stop & Shop, with a store in Wilton Center, on Sept. 8 launched its Free Fruit for Kids program in all of its stores. The program offers free fruit to children ages 10 and under to encourage healthy snacking while their parents or caregivers shop.

"We hope to help shape healthier habits in our tiniest of customers by offering a convenient and naturally sweet snack to enjoy as they shop with their parents," said Julie Hersey, nutritionist for Stop & Shop.

In-store signs and produce displays will direct customers to the free fruit that is available. Bananas will be offered to start, and later this fall, mandarin oranges will be offered. Customers are encouraged to take one piece of fruit per child.
