The days may be short, but many people enjoy the cold that January brings, and so the Wilton Chamber of Commerce has created an event to celebrate the winter season. The inaugural Wilton Winter Carnival is set for Jan. 28.

It will be a Sunday afternoon, from noon to 4, in Wilton Center, including Schenck’s Island, where there will be a bonfire to match the one from a month before at the Winter and Holiday Stroll.

There will be horse-drawn carriage rides, live ice-sculpting, a scavenger hunt, music, the bonfire, winter games, a chili cook-off, and other attractions.

“We are delighted to bring this new fun-for-all-ages event to our town. We hope everyone will join us as we transform Wilton Center into a winter thoroughfare, filled with activity,” said Debra Hanson, executive director of the Chamber.

Susan Goldman, president of the Chamber, said this could be the first of many more.

“We are thankful to all who are making it possible through their sponsorships, support and enthusiasm as we embark on what we hope will be an annual winter event,” Goldman said.

First Selectman Lynne Vanderslice said the Winter Carnival is a great way to bring people outside to enjoy an afternoon with fellow residents and guests from neighboring towns. “The town is looking forward to working with the Chamber to provide a fun event which we hope will become an annual tradition,” Vanderslice said.

The idea is to bring people into the town to see “how great Wilton is,” Hanson said, “and encourage them to do business here, with an ice sculpture demonstration and some marshmallows and hot cocoa at the bonfire. We’re looking into chainsaw lumber sculpting.”

Sponsorships and opportunities to participate in the Winter Carnival are still available.

Snowflakes on Display

The Chamber will launch its Winter Carnival with Snowflakes on Display in cooperation with the town and the Trackside Teen Center. Custom snowflakes, decorated by businesses, organizations and families for a $35 sponsorship fee, will adorn town lampposts from Jan. 26 through Feb. 5.

Those who purchase pre-cut wooden snowflakes will be able to pick them up at Trackside on Jan. 11 and 12, from 10 to 4. Completed snowflakes must be returned to the teen center Jan. 22 and 23, between 10 and 4. Details and application forms are available at wiltonchamber.com.
