With its strong finish at the Tal Atkins Memorial Quiz Bowl Tournament, the quiz bowl team from Wilton High School proved themselves worthy to play on a national stage. On Saturday, May 29, the team will represent their school in a 224-team national competition: National Academic Quiz Tournaments' High School National Championship Tournament (NAQT.) The event will be the 22nd edition of the High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT.) The 2020 championships were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All of this year's NAQT championship tournaments will be held online through video conferences. Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students. Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Participation in quiz bowl both reinforces lessons from the classroom where students learn and encourage players to develop new intellectual interests. Wilton has attended the HSNCT once before. Wilton may also face familiar foes at the tournament, as Darien and Hotchkiss (from Lakeville) will also be attending. The team comes in with some nationals experience: Lukas Koutsoukos played the 2021 High School Individual Player National Championship Tournament and the 2019 Middle School National Championship Tournament in Rosemont, Illinois. The team will be captained by Koutsoukos, who will be joined by Vihan Jayawardhane. The team will be coached by Jim Koutsoukos and Rena Therattil.
