The Wilton Tree Committee was formed to plant, protect and promote better understanding of the vital role of trees in the community. As part of the Wilton Tree Center Plan, the committee is tagging its tree inventory in the center. The tree inventory lists town-owned and private trees that provide a community benefit, such as shading a sidewalk, roadway or public space and adding to the scenery as in the streetscape. The tree tags help the committee keep track of changes to those trees, maintenance issues, original donors, or ownership. They link inventory data with individual trees and greatly enhance communication. The tree committee invites members of the community to consider donating a tree to expand the town’s existing tree inventory. The cost of donating shade trees such as red maples or white oaks is $500. The cost includes the tree, planting and maintenance, as well as a marker identifying the tree and person in whose name the tree was donated. Trees donated now through early spring will be ordered for spring planting on Arbor Day in the town center. Trees may be given to memorialize a loved one, celebrate a milestone, in remembrance of a special occasion, or to show a love of nature. A tree donation makes a “green” and lasting gift. Information: Wilton Department of Environmental Affairs, 203-563-0180.
