Silver Hill CEO talks Strength in Recovery

September is National Recovery Month, and Communities 4 Action is hosting “Strength in Recovery,” a free luncheon for professionals, on Thursday Sept. 24, from noon to 1:30pm at the Ferguson Library, Harry Bennett Branch, 115 Vine Road, Stamford. Dr. Sigurd Ackerman, president and CEO of Silver Hill Hospital, one of the sponsoring organizations, said recovery encompasses overcoming all mental illnesses including drug and alcohol addiction, bipolar disorders, disordered eating, suicide behavior, depression and anxiety. “Recovery is an ongoing process for anyone who has struggled with mental illness. It is about leading a meaningful life and recognizing their full potential,” Ackerman said. “Recovery is a journey, and it is not always an easy one. It can take a team of professionals including social workers, mental health professionals, general practitioners, lawyers, and clergy to help with each successful outcome.” Joyce Sixsmith, LADC Consultant for Communities 4 Action, said the purpose of the luncheon is to recognize the dedication of both treatment professionals and attorneys who support their clients and their loved ones in recovery, provide them with an update on current local initiatives, and also give them the opportunity to further extend their own professional network. “Our families and communities have received wonderful guidance from this group, “ Sixsmith said. “Their impact is profound, and it is our pleasure to host this event for them as we celebrate recovery.. Michael Askew from Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery will speak about recovery efforts in Fairfield County, and two attorneys, Matthew Maddox and Deborah Noonan, will review their legal work with individuals who abuse substances. Several individuals currently in recovery will also present. Ending on a note of hope, the luncheon will close with a special musical selection from the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery Choir. In addition to Communities 4 Action and Silver Hill Hospital, the event is also sponsored Liberation Programs, Causeway Collaborative, The Life Solution Center of Darien, Turning Point, Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery, and Aware Recovery.
