Those looking to buy fresh Florida citrus for a good cause have until Wednesday, Feb. 24 to place an order through the Kiwanis Club of Wilton’s 23rd annual Charity Citrus Sale. Tree-ripened valencia oranges, pink grapefruits and honey tangerines from Vero Beach, Fla., are being sold during the club’s largest fund-raiser, with all net proceeds going to at least 15 charitable causes. “Every penny that is made through the Citrus Sale goes to help the community we live in,” said Marty Clancy, member of the Wilton Kiwanis Club and head of this year’s Citrus Sale. “Whether it be our senior citizens, children or teenagers — we push it all back into the community we live in.” Last year, the Wilton Kiwanis Club had its best year ever when it distributed 1,400 cases of fruit and raised $17,000 for charities. This year, Clancy said, the goal is to raise $20,000. “It’s a big goal, but we think we can do it with the help of the partnerships,” said Clancy. “The sale has become larger and larger each year as more Wiltonians join the program and as we reach out to neighboring communities to have them help us.” The club has partnered with Grace Community Church in New Canaan, the Wilton High School wrestling team and, new this year, the Knights of Columbu of St. Matthew Church in Norwalk. The Grace Church dedicates its funds to the Bridgeport Rescue Mission and the Knights will be giving their proceeds to the Fisher House, a place for veterans and their families to stay while being treated at many of the VA hospitals around the country. Clancy said he would like to thank all those who have supported the Kiwanis Club over the years. “There are 500-600 families in the surrounding area that come back and help us meet our goals,” he said. The Wilton Kiwanis Club will be accepting orders through Feb. 24, which can be placed via mail-in order form with check or money order payable to Wilton Kiwanis Foundation, P.O. Box 204, Wilton, CT 06897; or online by credit card or PayPal at wiltonkiwanis.org. The citrus can be purchased by the case of one fruit or mixed combinations of grapefruit and oranges or grapefruit and tangerines. “Our citrus is picked fresh,” said Clancy. “People will be getting quality products.” The fruit will be transported by refrigerated truck to ECS Transportation, 390 Danbury Road, where they will be available for pick up on: Friday, March 4, from noon to 5.
