Bruce Springsteen sang about driving a car that was “chrome-wheeled, fuel-injected, and stepping out over the line.” That car might have been on Highway 9 in “Born to Run,” but classic cars will be all the rage near Routes 7 and 33 in Wilton on Friday, July 12. The Wilton Kiwanis Club, along with Coachmen Car Club, is hosting the 13th annual Classic & Custom Car Show/Thomas (Geeb) Fleming Memorial Cruise that night from 6 to 9. The show will be in Wilton Center at the Piersall Building, just off Center Street. All cars are welcome to be displayed at the show, with the stipulation being that it was built before 1980. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks will be available for purchase, and an ice cream truck will be on the grounds. “The goal is to induce people to come on out for a casual, informal and, basically social event,” said Kevin Craw, who manages the event for the Kiwanis Club. “The Coachmen bring about two dozen cars normally, including some great hot rods,” he added. “I just help flip burgers.” Yet Mr. Craw will show some of his own prized vehicles, including a newly restored 1962 Triumph TR3, along with a 1971 BMW that belonged to his father. “In the past, we’ve had some fabulous cars, including some vintage Ferraris and Cobras,” he said. Mr. Craw added that he’s hoping local car owners will drive out and join the fun. “It’s nothing special, he said. “You don’t need to do any detailing or anything like that. We just want people who love cars to come out, grab a burger, and walk around to chat with other car lovers.” Trophies, door prizes, and dash plaques will be presented, sponsored by Wilton-based businesses. Besides classic cars, fire trucks, race cars, and military vehicles will also be on display. Mr. Craw stressed it will be great fun for all ages, with proceeds going to the Wilton Kiwanis Club. The event is named in honor of Geeb Fleming, who died after being hit by a drunken driver in a motorcycle accident on July 5, 2009. Mr. Fleming helped manage the show with Mr. Craw. “The show’s title is a bit cumbersome, but it’s worth it to honor Geeb, who we miss dearly, but we know he’s watching,” Mr. Craw said.
