It seems like yesterday that the touching and memorable “Most Happy Fella” performed at Goodspeed Opera House. Spiro Mala, the man largely responsible for the 1991 revival’s stunning impact, died June 23 at age 86.
Mala’s starring role was a mid-career turn for the opera star. His opera years began quickly in 1960, when he was a discovered at both the American Opera and the Met National Council auditions. He made his New York City Opera debut as Spinelloccio in “Gianni Schicchi” soon after.
