For those gold medal wannabes as well as those who just want to get off the sofa, registration has begun at the Wilton Family Y for its early fall session of classes and programs, which starts Sept. 4 and runs through Oct. 27.

"Many people are spurred on by this year's Summer Olympics to enroll in a sports, fitness or aquatics program at the Y for themselves or their children," said Y Membership Director Michelle Wishna. "The Y offers many activities that have been highlighted by the Olympics such as swimming, gymnastics, martial arts, archery and volleyball, so it's easy to get involved. Others see what great shape the Olympic athletes are in and become inspired to get in better shape through our fitness programs."

Y aquatic programs include swim lessons for ages six months through adults, Wahoo swim teams, pre- and post-natal exercise, aqua fitness, arthritis therapy, lifeguard training, lap swimming and family recreational time. Health and wellness encompasses the Y fitness center, group exercise classes, senior fitness, nutrition counseling, Diabetes Prevention, LiveStrong Cancer Rehab, yoga, Pilates Mat and Reformer, running and triathlon clubs. Adult sports offered are basketball, volleyball, racquetball and paddle tennis.

Preschool programs include nursery school, creative twos, kindergarten enrichment, fitness and dance classes, gymnastics, and sports.

Youth activities include indoor tennis, basketball, floor hockey, flag football, archery and martial arts. The Y's Neighborhood Club is an after school childcare program for grades 1 to 6, and the Student Union is for older students grades 7 to 11.

The Y's Gymnastics Training Center at 644 Danbury Road, which opened earlier this year, offers preschool, progressive and pre-team and team levels as well as a new boys gymnastics section.

Y outreach for children with special needs includes Friday night Friends and Buddies, a variety of Special Olympics activities, and family events.
