Wilton was featured briefly in an episode of the PBS NewsHour on Monday night, Dec. 17. The show’s story on children’s free play featured an interview with Lenore Skenazy of Let Grow. Wilton was mentioned as one of several communities working to make kids’ lives less restrictive through free play.

The Wilton Youth Council has invited several experts, including Skenazy, to speak on the matter of allowing children to play with fewer parental structures. The story focused on a woman who was investigated by her community’s Child Protective Services after allowing her 8-year-old daughter to walk their dog by herself.

Boston University’s Peter Gray supported the idea that children need more independence, citing youth sports are not a substitution for free play.

“Kids are made to run around chasing one another, laughing, until their sides are splitting,” he said. “That’s how they get exercise.”
