Approximately 700 people participated in the eighth annual STAR Walk, Roll and Stroll on Sunday, May 5, at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, benefiting Southwestern Connecticut individuals with developmental disabilities, and their families. The event was chaired by the Bocuzzo family of Wilton and raised over $90,000.

“This was a very special day for our families,” said STAR Executive Director Katie Banzhaf. “We are grateful for the support of the many area businesses, schools, community leaders and families involved with this event.”

STAR Board President Ed Piorkowski of Darien offered opening remarks and introduced The Bocuzzo family. Among the guest speakers was state Rep. Gail Lavielle (R-143) of Wilton who spoke about the work STAR does throughout Mid-Fairfield County.

The STAR Walk, Roll & Stroll is the second largest fund-raiser each year for the organization that offers a full range of programs for individuals of all ages throughout Norwalk, Westport, Weston, Wilton, Darien and New Canaan. Starting with Early Intervention and Birth to 3 preschool programs, STAR assists individuals with school, advocacy and transitional (school-to-work or training) programs, job training and placement, manages 22 group homes and shared living apartments/condos, recreational clubs and trips, senior services and provides transportation to their appointments and daily activities. STAR also provides trained respite care to families.

Village Market was an in-kind sponsor of this year’s walk.
