Well-known and much-loved Dr. Seuss characters — from the Cat in the Hat and Horton the Elephant to Gertrude McFuzz and Mayzie La Bird — come to Wilton on Friday, March 17, when the Wilton Children’s Theater presents Seussical at Middlebrook School.
Fifty-five Wilton fourth through eighth graders have been rehearsing for opening night and the two subsequent shows on Saturday, March 18, and Sunday, March 19, since early January.
The Cat in the Hat, played by Ryan Witty, will lead audiences to the Jungle of Nool, where they’ll meet Horton the Elephant, played by Eli Grass, and the tiny people of Who — including a little girl with a big imagination named Jojo, played by Daniella Sallese.
The Whos are in trouble and Horton must help them, but he also has to help Mayzie La Bird, played by Zehra Reza, by sitting on her egg. The only one who believes in him is his neighbor, Gertrude McFuzz, played by Hailey Smith.
The show is directed by Ginny Ruggieri, choreographed by Andrea Metchick and produced by Miki Lasher and Sarah Beach.
“It’s a magical show,” said Beach. “I think young kids will love seeing the characters from all their favorite books come alive, including Thing 1 and Thing 2.”
The show features “catchy and fantastic” music directed by Al Galletly, said Beach, and “amazing” sets designed and built under the artistic guidance of Brooke Burling.
“It’s quite a spectacle,” she said. “I think people will leave feeling uplifted.”
Lasher said while people “love to see the characters in action and the funny pranks of the Cat in the Hat,” it’s also “great to reinforce Dr. Seuss’s wonderful themes of using your imagination, being yourself, and that every little person is important.”
Show dates and times are:
- Friday, March 17, at 7.
- Saturday, March 18, at 4.
- Sunday, March 19, at 2.
Tickets are available at wiltonchildrenstheater.org , in person at the Village Market from noon to 2 until March 18, and one hour before each performance at the Middlebrook School auditorium, 131 School Road.
