Voting turnout is light for primary

As of 1 this afternoon, 618 people had cast a ballot in today's primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Joseph Lieberman, who is retiring. That is 9% of all eligible voters, both Republican and Democrat.

Because the tabulator accepts both sets of ballots, Republican Registrar of Voters Tina Gardner said she could not give the turnout for the individual parties.

On the ballot for the Democrats are U.S. Congressman Christopher Murphy, the party-endorsed candidate, and Susan Bysiewicz, former secretary of the state.

On the Republican ballot are Linda McMahon, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, the party-endorsed candidate, challenged by Christopher Shays, former 4th District Congressman.

Wilton's three polling places are open until 8 this evening. District 1 votes at Wilton High School (Clune Center Lobby), District 2 votes at Cider Mill School, and District 3 votes at the Middlebrook School cafeteria.

Results will be posted online tonight as soon as they become available.
