Visiting nurses offer caregiver support group

Wilton’s Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County is sponsoring an eight-week support group for caregivers this month. Beginning Sept. 16, the Caregivers’ Support Group will meet in Wilton every Tuesday afternoon from 1:30 to 3, through Nov. 4. The support group is free and open to the public but pre-registration is required.

“Any person caring for a family member or loved one at home with a chronic illness or debilitating condition soon realizes that they have lost their independence and freedom,” said Rachel Yurdin, a grief and bereavement counselor with the nursing agency.

“The stress and exhaustion can be overwhelming for caregivers, who are frequently elderly. Caregivers need to take a break and take care of themselves. They need to talk with others in similar circumstances, where they will find understanding that isn’t available anywhere else.”

The group will meet at the agency’s offices in Suite 114 of the Health and Wellness Center at  761 Main Avenue (Route 7) on the Wilton/Norwalk town line.
