Utility warns of phone scam

South Norwalk Electric and Water (SNEW) reports it has received complaints from several customers indicating they had been contacted by phone by individuals claiming to be from the utility; threatening to shut off their service if they do not make immediate payment using a credit card, debit card or other electronic methodology.

.SNEW, which has 300 customers in the Silvermine section of Wilton, said it does not terminate customers through cold calls and always sends multiple letters to customers prior to any termination of service. These letters provide customers with a phone number to call the Customer Service Department.

The utility says customers should not make payments under any circumstances unless they are made in person at the office at One State Street in the South Norwalk Railroad Station or by check mailed to SNEW.

Customers who wish to verify the authenticity of any individual who contacts them either in person or through the phone claiming to be from the utility should call SNEW at 203-866-3366 and press 1 for customer service.
