The Wilton Family Y is offering three new teen clubs as part of its fall and winter program sessions.

YMCA Youth in Government gives high school students an opportunity to learn firsthand about government and civic issues by taking an active role in the democratic process. Students participate in local meetings each week that give training in identifying issues, writing bills and advocating for their passage, debating positions, and making two trips to the Capitol in Hartford to attend statewide student-run conferences as simulated legislative assemblies.

Youth in Government is a national YMCA program that is very active in the state of Connecticut, giving participants who are interested in the political process a hands-on experience in civic engagement. Meeting days and times to be announced by group leader Dillon Coyle.

Leaders Club works with sixth through eighth graders on developing positive life skills and leadership qualities by connecting members to community service projects with local businesses and nonprofits. The club focuses on assessing and understanding community needs, cultural diversity and team-building projects. Leaders Club meets on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 led by Dillon Coyle.

YMCA Book Club encourages students aged 12-15 to stimulate their minds and share a passion for reading through books selected by the group which reflect diverse interests. Participants can increase vocabulary plus learn about new subjects and experiences by exploring interesting stories. The Book Club meets Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30, led by Geoff Malyszka.

Sister Circle Girls’ Empowerment Group encourages the development of strength, courage and confidence during the teen years of 12-18. Discussion topics will include peer pressure, healthy living routines, body image and building positive relationships.  Activities planned are healthy eating and cooking, group workouts, ropes course, money management, self-defense and automotive maintenance. Sister Circle meets Mondays, 3:30-4:30, led by Laura Koellmer.
