The Y offers new clubs for teens
YMCA Youth in Government gives high school students an opportunity to learn firsthand about government and civic issues by taking an active role in the democratic process. Students participate in local meetings each week that give training in identifying issues, writing bills and advocating for their passage, debating positions, and making two trips to the Capitol in Hartford to attend statewide student-run conferences as simulated legislative assemblies.
Youth in Government is a national YMCA program that is very active in the state of Connecticut, giving participants who are interested in the political process a hands-on experience in civic engagement. Meeting days and times to be announced by group leader Dillon Coyle.
Leaders Club works with sixth through eighth graders on developing positive life skills and leadership qualities by connecting members to community service projects with local businesses and nonprofits. The club focuses on assessing and understanding community needs, cultural diversity and team-building projects. Leaders Club meets on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 led by Dillon Coyle.
