Anyone liable to pay taxes in Wilton on the assessment list of Oct. 1, 2012, is required to pay the second installment of taxes to the Wilton tax collector’s office by Jan. 1, 2014.

Tax Collector Philip Damato says Wilton has a track record of well-collected taxes.

“Definitely the majority [of people pay their taxes]. Our collection is about 99.3% paid for the grand list for the whole year. You’re always going to have a few delinquent people, but the majority of people pay,” he said.

The tax collector’s office is at Wilton Town Hall at 238 Danbury Road. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Payment may be made without interest due by Feb. 3, 2014.

If the tax liability is not paid by that date, it will become delinquent, and subject to interest at 18% per year, or 1.50% per month, beginning Jan. 14. If a property owner does not pay the second installment by Feb. 3, the interest charged to the liability is relative to a Jan. 1 due date, meaning 3% interest is applied automatically. The minimum interest charge is $2, according to state statute.

Most Wilton residents will not have to worry about this penalty, Mr. Damato said on Tuesday.

“The majority of people know the rules, and the majority of them pay [on time]. There are very few that don’t understand. We advise them online, and we put notices in The Bulletin,” Mr. Damato said.

There will be no additional tax bill mailed for this installment, as the original tax bill mailed in July 2013 contains instructions for both installments.

In addition, motor vehicle supplemental taxes will be due on Jan. 1 and may be paid without interest before Feb. 3. The supplemental tax bills are only for those who registered cars between Oct. 2, 2012, and July 31, 2013.
