Since Monday, June 13, both Poverty Hollow Road and Route 53 in Redding will be closed to traffic until August.
Poverty Hollow will be closed near its intersection with Stepney Road, and Route 53 will be closed just south of its intersection with Umpawaug Road.
Both roads are being closed so that bridge work can be done. This work cannot be done with alternating lane traffic, Redding First Selectman Julia Pemberton said earlier this month.
There is no local detour for the Route 53 road closure, and the state suggests those who usually travel on the road should detour by taking Route 302 (in Bethel), Route 58 (in Bethel and Redding) and Route 107 (in Redding).
There is also no local detour for the Poverty Hollow closure. The town suggests those who usually travel on the road should detour by taking Church Hill Road to Route 58.
Umpawaug Road will probably see a large uptick in traffic in the coming weeks, as it connects two areas of town served largely by Route 53.
Over the last month, Redding police have increased their presence on Umpawaug. They will continue to monitor the road closely after Route 53 closes.
