Redding First Selectman Julia Pemberton said Monday night, Aug. 15, both of the closed bridges in her town —  one at the intersection of Route 53 and Umpawaug, and one on Stepney Road — would be open before school starts.

Pemberton said she had met with state Department of Transportation officials on Aug. 9 and they assured her both bridges would open by Aug. 31.

However, she added the bridges may only be open to alternating lanes of traffic since the project will not be completed.

Some construction parts for both bridges were unexpectedly delayed, she said, but the construction crews were able to make up some time over recent weeks.

The bridge on Stepney Road, near its intersection with Poverty Hollow, will require the installation of temporary jersey barriers when it is first opened to traffic, Pemberton said, and a police officer may be stationed at the road to direct traffic during rush hour.
