Protecting the nest

A mallard hen guards her nest of eight or so eggs hidden under a Japanese Maple outside Subway in Wilton Center on Monday, May 9. A Subway employee told The Bulletin that the mother covers her eggs with wood chips and dirt before leaving for daily ‘lunch breaks’ and Subway employees leave cups of water under the bush. The employee said he expects the eggs to hatch in about a week.
