While winters in Connecticut seem to get longer and longer, brighter and warmer days are coming soon. According to Wilton Garden Club member Sherry Johnson, the club’s upcoming 77th Annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale is a good harbinger of sunny days ahead.

“Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, ‘Earth laughs in flowers,’ and our plant sale is sure to make everyone smile,” she said with a huge smile of her own. “We’ve been working furiously in the greenhouse to get things ready for this sale, and finally we’re starting to see some flowers. Emerson got it right, those flowers really do make us smile,” she added.

In addition to nurturing seeds and propagating donated plants in the greenhouse, the garden club is pulling together a wide selection of hanging baskets, patio containers and decorative flower baskets that have been creatively designed by members.

“This year we’ll be opening up our greenhouse to the public prior to the plant sale so that people can get a jump on their shopping,” Johnson said. “We did it last year for the first time, and it was a huge success.”

The presale will be at the club’s greenhouse at the Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road, on Wednesday, May 4, from 9:30 to 1:30.

It will be followed by the club’s Mother’s Day Plant Sale, which is the its primary fund-raiser, on Friday, May 6, from noon to 6, and Saturday, May 7, from 9 to noon, rain or shine, at Wilton’s Town Green.

Begonias and other annuals will be just a few of the selections available at the Wilton Garden Club’s Mother’s Day Plant Sale May 6-7.
