Man sentenced to probation for stealing metal from shipyard

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine (AP) — A Maine man has been sentenced to a year of probation for stealing scrap metal from a naval shipyard.

A federal judge sentenced Michael Gamash, 65, of Old Orchard Beach on Thursday. The judge also ordered Gamash to pay more than $62,000 to the U.S. Navy.

Gamash took the scrap metal from dumpsters located at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and sold them to local metal dealers, court records state. He was an employee of the shipyard at the time.

Naval Criminal Investigative Services investigated the case. The justice department said Gamash told investigators that he was aware that what he was doing was illegal. The theft constituted theft of government property.

Gamash pleaded guilty in June. A call to a phone number listed under his name was disconnected.
