Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, one in four deaths are caused by heart disease. Heart disease can often be prevented by making healthy choices and getting regular checkups.

In honor of February Heart Month, Stay at Home in Wilton and Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County are sponsoring a free event on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 3 to 5, at the Wilton Senior Center in the Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road.

During her talk, Keeping Our Heart Rhythm in Sync, registered nurse Melody Matheny Orpen will offer tips on keeping a healthy heart. In addition to the well-known suggestions of eating a low-fat, low-salt diet, getting exercise three to four times a week, stopping smoking and controlling cholesterol, she will offer some lesser-known tips

Orpen, the nursing agency’s community health coordinator, is a popular speaker at the Wilton Senior Center. Her most recent talk was Getting Old Isn’t for Sissies.
