WEST HAVEN — A Guilford woman and wife of a local hockey coach was arrested and charged with assault after an alleged altercation with a West Haven High School student during a recent championship hockey game, police said.

Fans began to argue during the Southern Connecticut Conference’s Girls Hockey Championship on Feb. 25, which featured Guilford High School and the West Haven-Sacred Heart hockey team at Bennett Rink, Sgt. Patrick Buturla said in an email.

“The argument quickly turned physical and Officers on scene attempted to intervene,” he said. “During this altercation it was discovered that Christina Binkowski had physically assaulted a West Haven High School student and the student required medical attention.”

Binkowski, 47, is charged with breach of peace and third-degree assault, Buturla said.

According to state records, Binkowski was released on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Milford March 22.

“The West Haven Police Department and West Haven Board of Education will continue to promote a safe environment for our students, athletes and fans at all sporting events and incidents of violence at our facilities will not be tolerated,” Buturla said.

Rick Binkowski, coach of the Guilford girls hockey team, declined comment for himself and on his wife’s behalf Tuesday.
