Food industry in Connecticut is focus of state voters league conference
Food is a $3.5-billion industry in Connecticut and is directly linked to more than 20,000 jobs in the state.
On Saturday, Oct. 27, the League of Women Voters of Connecticut Education Fund will host a fall conference, From Land and Sea: Food for the Good of Connecticut, to showcase the role food plays in the economy and health of Connecticut.
The event, which is open to the public, will be held at the Agriscience and Biotechnology Center in Trumbull from 9 to 12:30.
The conference is supported by Cigna.
A panel of speakers will include Steve Reviczky, state Commissioner of Agriculture; Dr. David Katz, Prevention Research Center, Yale University; John Turenne, Sustainable Food Systems, LLC; and Lucy Nolan, executive director, End-Hunger Connecticut.
A Q & A session will follow.
In addition, the league has invited the state’s Agricultural Science and Technology Center students to participate in a competition proposing innovative ways to meet the goal of improving Connecticut’s economy as it relates to food production. The winners of this competition will present their ideas at the conference.
Cost for the Oct. 27 conference is $10 for students, $15 for general admission ($20 after Oct. 22 or at the door), and $35 for supporters.
