Extreme Gaga is back!

Extreme Gaga is back for a second year at the Wilton Family Y — but what is it?

Extreme Gaga originates from the game of Gaga, “a fast-paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit,” according to the New York City Gaga Center’s website.

To be victorious, players must hit opponents below the knee with a soft foam ball while jumping, dodging, striking and running.

Think of Gaga as a gentler form of dodgeball.

“Extreme Gaga is taking the regular game of Gaga and adding additional challenges and variances to the regular rules,” explained Aaron Britton, Wilton Y camp director and Extreme Gaga coordinator.

“It’s everyone for his or herself. If the ball touches you below the knee, you’re out. Last one in the pit wins, then everyone hops back in for the next round.”

Each Extreme Gaga game at the Wilton Family Y lasts no longer than five minutes, said Mr. Britton.

“It’s definitely a great workout,” he said. “Because the games do not last very long, the participants can get right back in and start the next game,” he said.

In spring 2013, the Wilton Y purchased the Extreme Gaga pit to be used at Camp Gordyland, said Mr. Britton, and Extreme Gaga coach Zack Block and Wilton Y staff member Mike Kazlauskas put it together.

After the purchase of the pit, Mr. Britton said, the game became a quick hit with the campers.

“The feedback we receive is very positive. Not only is it fun when it is ‘extreme,’ but we know it’s one of the favorite activities at Camp Gordyland as well,” he said.

At the Wilton Y, Mr. Britton said, between five and eight children typically participate in a game of Extreme Gaga at a time.

“The best part about Gaga is that the more participants, the better,” he said, “and, of course, we are always on the lookout for players.”

There are no requirements to play in Wilton Y’s Extreme Gaga games, said Mr. Britton.

“We start out players at first grade and have had mixed ages play with much success,” he said.

“That’s where Coach Zack makes sure everyone follows the same rules and follows the variant correctly.”

The Wilton Family Y hosts Extreme Gaga on Mondays, from 3:15 to 4:15 and 4:30 to 5:30; and Thursdays and Fridays, from 2:30 to 3:15.

The cost to play for Y members is $45 on Mondays, and $35 on Thursdays and Fridays. For non-members, it’s $60 on Mondays, and $50 on Thursdays and Fridays.
