Easing conversations on difficult topics

The Rev. Shannon White will head a free presentation and panel discussion called Let’s Talk: Adult Children and Their Parents, Tuesday, Nov. 12, 7 p.m., at Wilton Library. The program is presented by Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County and is open to the community.

Ms. White is the pastor of Wilton Presbyterian Church and author of the book The Invisible Conversations with Your Aging Parents.

Speaking honestly and from the heart can be enormously difficult for adult children and their elderly parents especially when it comes to discussing such sensitive issues as living arrangements, declining health, money, or the ability to drive. This program will help people speak more directly about the important, and sometimes difficult, topics that need to be addressed within families.

Ms. White will offer practical advice and ways to alleviate stress with respect to frank and open communications and foster a deeper connection in relationships.

Following her presentation, she will be joined by a panel of experts in a discussion about the important issues that need to be dealt with in families. The panel will include experts in elder law, healthcare, social work and dementia care and they will discuss such concerns as legal matters (living wills, last will and testament, power of attorney) and healthcare issues (caregiving, memory loss, end-of-life decisions).

This presentation and panel discussion is not just for adult children and their parents but for spouses, extended family and anyone who recognizes the need for open and honest communication within a caring relationship.
