Churches offer joint concert featuring Pete Malinverni

Lift Every Voice — a concert of celebration incorporating gospel and jazz — will come to Wilton Presbyterian Church, 48 New Canaan Road, on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m.

The concert will feature Pete Malinverni, world-renowned jazz musician and director of jazz studies at SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. Mr. Malinverni will be accompanied by a group of his singers from SUNY.

The concert is a joint venture of Wilton Presbyterian Church and Grace Baptist Church of Norwalk. All proceeds will benefit the Norwalk Children’s Foundation.

This is not the first time the two congregations have worked together. Countering the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s assertion that “the most segregated hour in Christian America is the 11 o’clock worship hour,” the two churches have held joint worship services once a year for nearly a decade.

“This is just another opportunity for our two churches to express by our deeds our commitment to seeing beyond skin color and to embrace the benefits of such,” said the Rev. Lindsay Curtis, pastor of Grace Baptist Church.

“Music and service provide our congregations a perfect opportunity to get to know one another better and to support the vision of Dr. King,” the Rev. Shannon White, pastor of Wilton Presbyterian Church said. “Pete Malinverni’s music helps us do that.”

Members of both churches expressed interest in expanding their relationship beyond worship, and the idea of this joint celebration concert to support Norwalk Children’s Foundation was born.

Tickets may be purchased for $20 for adults and $10 for children. For ticket information, call 203-762-5514 or email lift everyvoice2014@gmail.com.

Both congregations will host a reception in the church’s Parish Hall immediately following the concert. All are welcome.
