The Wilton Congrega-tional Church (WCC) Board of Missions and Service will participate in The Big Day of Serving in Keansburg, N.J. on Saturday, Dec. 1.

"We are asking any and all who are able to volunteer on that day to assist our brothers and sisters in New Jersey who lost so much in Hurricane Sandy. The best part is that the age qualification is 12 and up, so families can be a part of this important volunteer effort," the church board said in a press release.

The cost of $20 per person includes supplies and lunch for all volunteers. A free bus will be available, leaving the church at 5:30 a.m. to arrive in time to start work at 8. A voluntary youth service will be held around 4.

Since some work could involve ripping out drywall, insulation and flooring that was destroyed by flood waters, volunteers are advised to wear clothing they might not expect to keep.

The weather could be cold, with several of the houses still without power. While some work materials will be provided, the church recommends each participant bring a bucket filled with some of the most-needed items to be left at the site.

A partial list includes a warm hat, extra-heavy work gloves, latex or plastic gloves, R90 safety mask, safety glasses/goggles, protective suits, pry bars, hammers, garbage bags, personal flashlights/headlamps, bottled water.

To share with the community, donations of the following are suggested: canned vegetables and soups, evaporated milk, condiments, canned tuna and chicken, blankets, new underwear and socks, bleach, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, black garbage bags.
