The Wilton Chamber of Commerce has announced its slate of candidates for the organization’s Board of Directors for 2013-2014 in late July, and officially voted them into office on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

On Wednesday morning, the current board unanimously voted to approve the candidate list, which includes Susan Goldman, of Gregory & Adams Law Firm; John DiCenzo, of Halstead Properties; Karen Strickland, of the Wilton YMCA; and Tom Sato, owner of Wilton Hardware.

The board-elects will take their office on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The Board of Directors are tasked withhelping the chamber of commerce fufill its mission: to advance the commercial and civic interests in Wilton through economic development, business relations, membership programs, and community development programs.

The Bulletin sat down with the candidates this week to ask each new elect a few questions about being nominated to the board.

Karen Strickland

Wilton Family Y

Why are you interested in becoming a part of the Wilton Chamber of Commerce?

I was a member of the Chamber Board of Directors for many years. After taking a year off, I was very flattered to be invited to re-join the board. The chamber is a wonderful organization with a lot of dedicated, talented people who want to improve the business environment in Wilton and offer activities for the community. The Wilton Y is the largest employer of young people in town and offers programs for business people, so we believe it is important to have representation in civic matters.

What initiatives would you like to advance as a member of the Board of Directors?

My role on the board will be to oversee the Program Committee, which is quite challenging since the chamber always does such a great job in this area. We currently sponsor two road races, a golf tournament, the annual Halloween scarecrow display and costume parade, among others. I plan to be very involved in all of these programs.

Why are you interested in becoming a part of the Wilton Chamber of Commerce?

We just opened last October, so I obviously have a big interest in making sure Wilton has an active, vibrant business community; the kind of place where people want to shop. I want to make it a choice thought for them to shop here rather than go out of town.

What initiatives would you like to advance as a member of the Board of Directors?

I would bring a fresh perspective to the board. My background is in marketing before I got into retail. I have a different perspective than someone who has been doing retail for a much longer time. I’ve lived in Wilton since 1986, and I have shopped extensively here. I view things — still — more as a shopper than a retailer. There’s a way for us to figure out how to make customers have as pleasant a shopping experience in Wilton as possible. Hopefully there is a way we can provide that.

John Dicenzo

Halstead Properties

Why are you interested in becoming a part of the Wilton Chamber of Commerce?

Halstead Properties has been active with the chamber for three years, and I was invited to join the board and accepted the nomination. I accepted because I really appreciate the good work that the chamber does for Wilton.

What initiatives would you like to advance as a member of the Board of Directors?

In recent years, the chamber has become more active with community interfacing projects. I think these projects are very effective tools in raising the profile of local business and providing residents with events to enjoy. I will continue to support direct communication between business and the town through things like the Taste of Wilton, the sidewalk sales, and the scarecrow competition.

Susan Goldman, Esq.

Gregory & Adams Law Firm

Why are you interested in becoming a part of the Wilton Chamber of Commerce?

I have worked in town for 28 years in November, so I’ve really been here a long time. I really feel this is my community because I’ve worked here so long, and I want to see good things happen.  I want to keep that good movement going.

What initiatives would you like to advance as a member of the Board of Directors?

I would like to see more business owners and business people involved in chamber activities. I’m looking forward to more business growth in the After Hours program and other events hosted by the chamber. I’d like to see growth and improvement so there is more awareness of what the town has to offer to everyone.
