NEW HAVEN — Fans can fly on Avelo Airlines’ “special bowl flights” to cheer on the University of Connecticut Huskies in South Carolina later this month, the company said.

With UConn to play in the postseason Myrtle Beach Bowl against Marshall Thundering Herd Dec. 19, Avelo is offering a 25 percent discount for “bowl-bound” flights between Tweed-New Haven Airport and Myrtle Beach International Airport Dec. 17 and 20. Travelers can use the code "HUSKIES25" to get the discount.

Flights between New Haven and Myrtle Beach normally are offered Thursdays and Sundays, but those sold out within hours after UConn’s bowl announcement, according to airline spokesperson Jim Olson.

“These newly added flights will provide UConn fans with a convenient and affordable way to travel and cheer on the Huskies in the Myrtle Beach Bowl,” said David Benedict, UConn’s director of athletics.

As of Tuesday morning, an Avelo flight out of New Haven to Myrtle Beach Dec. 17 cost $179; with the code, the price was lowered to $141.

The roundtrip flights were 50 percent sold out as of Monday night, Olson said.

Olson said pricing is based on demand, noting Avelo is the only operator that offers nonstop flights out of Connecticut to Myrtle Beach. He reminded fans to not forget to use the code.

“I think even with those prices, if you compare them to other prices on those days to get to Myrtle Beach, it's probably pretty competitive, if not among the lowest,” he said.

The Huskies will play against Marshall at 20,000-seat Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. It will be UConn's first bowl game since 2015, when the Huskies lost to Marshall in the St. Petersburg Bowl.

“We’re excited to celebrate UConn’s first bowl appearance since 2015 with special flights for Husky fans to cheer on their team in Myrtle Beach,” said Andrew Levy, Avelo chairman and CEO. “We’re proud partners of UConn Athletics and are excited to offer Husky fans with the most affordable and convenient way to the game. Go Huskies!”
