American Legion Post 86 will retire flags
The James B. Whipple American Legion Post 86 will hold its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony Sunday, Sept. 16, at noon.
The post presents a formal ceremony to burn American flags no longer suitable for display. They may be torn, worn out, or the color faded.
"The ceremony we use is a show of respect for retiring the 'Colors.' Burning is the prescribed method we use," said Tom Moore, post adjutant.
The public is welcome to view the ceremony. They are also welcome to bring any American flags that need to be retired. There is also a holding box in front of the post headquarters at 112 Old Ridgefield Road, where old and worn flags may be placed. This box is out all year.
Immediately following the ceremony, a picnic will be held for Post 86 members and their families.
