Winter may not be over quite yet, but in Ambler Farm’s greenhouse, Farmer Jonathan Kirschner, director of agriculture, has already started many of the vegetable, herb and flower transplants the farm sells every spring.

Right now, gardeners may go to amblerfarm.org, and pre-order a wide range of transplants for pick-up in the spring. They may select from more than 70 varieties of tomatoes, 42 herbs, 36 different salad greens, as well as a huge selection of root vegetables, squashes, broccoli, peppers, leeks and onions, cucumbers, celeries, cantaloupe and watermelon, peas and flowers.

“Some plants, such as aliums, celery, and certain flowers, have a longer growing season,” Kirschner said. “By buying transplants started in the greenhouse in February and March, gardeners can get a one-month jump on their gardens.”

Ambler Farm also offers a “grown only to order” program to enable gardeners to experiment with more unusual varieties such as Black Sea Man tomatoes and Mammoth Melting Snow Peas, but gardeners must order these in advance.

Ambler Farm’s transplants are 100% organic, started from seed in compost-based potting soil. Customers will be emailed when they are ready to be picked up. Cold-tolerant plants are generally ready by mid-April, but warm-weather plants are often held until the weekend after Mother’s Day.

Prices range from $1.50 for a single transplant to $5 for a four-pack. All proceeds benefit Ambler Farm to support its educational and agricultural programs. Gardeners who don’t pre-buy may purchase many varieties of vegetable, herb and flower transplants at the farm on Saturdays from 9 to noon, starting in late April.
