Ambler Farm menagerie grows

Visitors to Ambler Farm may be in for some fowl language, following the recent arrival of baby animals. Eight chicks, seven ducks, three turkeys and two geese have joined the farm’s resident animals that include goats, sheep, laying hens and Flemish giant rabbits. More chicks are expected to arrive over the next two weeks.

The chicks are fellow Nutmeggers, coming from a farm in Monroe, while the rest of the flock is made up from midwesterners from Iowa.

They are all part of the farm’s summer program and will live here for the rest of the season, with a few remaining into the fall. Then, for the chicks, it’s off to new homes with Ambler Farm’s apprentice families, volunteer staff and other farm friends. The ducks, geese and turkeys will live at the Speckled Rooster, an organic farm in Westport. A few will remain into the fall.

Visitors are welcome and the best time to get up close is Saturday mornings between 9 and 11 when the Ambler Farm apprentices are on duty. The animals may also be viewed any time the farm is open, which is every day from dawn to dusk.
