Salute 2014 Gala honors heroes, veterans

Salute 2014, a benefit for ABRI/Homes for the Brave, will honor The Bridgeport Elks Lodge No. 36 and the Westport Arts Center with its inaugural Heroes Salute Award for their work with veterans who are homeless. The event takes place Friday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at the St. Ann Club, 16 Hendricks Avenue in Norwalk.

Tickets are $100 per person ($150 for couples). Proceeds will benefit ABRI/Homes for the Brave, a Bridgeport-based nonprofit that provides, with an emphasis on veterans, the housing, vocational and case management services necessary to help homeless individuals return to a productive and meaningful life.

Shalini Madaras of Wilton, who chairs the board of directors for ABRI/Homes for the Brave, explained that the Heroes Salute Award will complement a festive evening of activities featuring the Port 5 Naval Veterans Color Guard, a presentation of the flag, music and Italian hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer and dessert as well as unique auction items.

“Salute 2014 is our main annual fund-raising event,” she said. “It is our goal to offer quality housing and the best possible supportive programs to rebuild the civilian lives of these veterans. Since funding for our efforts is entirely dependent on grants, private donations and fund-raising efforts, we depend on and are hoping for enthusiastic participation from the community.”

Sponsors include Blue Buffalo and Nielsen of Wilton. In addition to Ms. Madaras, committee members from Wilton include Debra Fink, Syd and Mindy Gordon, Rose Krivoshik, Nancy Pantoliano, Mark and Anne Ryan, and Maria Sinchak.
