Norwalk Hospital hosts blood drive

Norwalk Hospital will host a community blood drive to benefit the Red Cross, Connecticut-region, on Friday, July 18, from 7:30 to noon in the Patio Room.

According to the American Red Cross, the need for blood is great throughout the year but especially in the summer months when donations decline due to holidays, vacations and other summer activities. One single donation (about one pint of blood) can save up to three lives.

Donors must be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.

The American Red Cross recommends drinking plenty of fluids on the day of donation, wearing comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up, eating iron-rich foods in the weeks prior to donation and bringing a list of any medications taken along with a photo identification.

The actual donation only takes about 10 minutes; however, donors should allow one hour for registering, giving a confidential health history and enjoying refreshments after donating.
