Newcomers plan spring 5k to benefit two in Wilton

The Wilton Newcomers Club had its first 5K fund-raiser planned for Dec. 8, but Storm Sandy put an end to those plans. The club decided to postpone the race, and the new date is March 16.

The club said in a press release it is hopeful the new date will bring in more runners as well as greater local sponsorship of the event.

As a result of the change, the club has renamed the event the Shamrock Shuffle 5K Charity Race. It will begin at 9 a.m. at Wilton Library. A 1K Kids Run will begin at 8:45 at the same starting line.

The Wilton Newcomers Club is a nonprofit social club committed to raising funds for local charitable organizations. In its inaugural outing, the Shamrock Shuffle 5K Charity Race will benefit two Wilton community members:

• The SMS Research Foundation in the name of the Iannuzzi family, who have a daughter with Smith-Magenis syndrome.

• Wilton police Officer Frank Razzaia, who is undergoing treatment for stage 3 lymphoma treatments. Money raised will help the Razzaia family offset medical costs as well as provide funds toward lymphoma research.

The cost is $25 for the 5K run. There is a $5 registration fee for the 1K Kids Run. Runners may register at through March 15, or on race day, when the fee will be $30.

Jennifer Iannuzzi is "thankful for the opportunity to be part of the Wilton Newcomers Club effort to raise funds for the SMS Research Foundation through the Shamrock Shuffle Charity 5K," according to the club's release. Information on SMS may be found at and Ms. Ianuzzi's blog:

Officer Razzaia has said, "I would like to let everyone know how grateful my family is for the support we have received from not only friends and family but the local community."
