New offerings at garden club sale
As in past years, there will be no lack of advice on planting and landscaping at the annual Wilton Garden Club’s Mother’s Day Plant Sale. What is new is that this year the club will be able to accept credit cards with a minimum $20 purchase. And, The Care of Trees will provide free delivery for purchases of large trees and shrubs.
The annual fund-raiser takes place on Friday, May 10 from noon to 6:30 and Saturday, May 11, from 9 to noon, at the Wilton Town Green.
In addition to azaleas in bloom, the shrub/tree area will have for sale: Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ redbud, a native tree with an unrivaled display of deep rose-colored flowers in spring; Cotinus coggygria ‘Young Lady’ smokebush with big grayish-pink blooms from June to August; Itea virginica ‘Henry’s Garnet Virginia Sweetspire,’ a shrub butterflies love for its fragrant white spring blooms and brilliant reddish-purple fall foliage; Hydrangea panticulata ‘Vanilla Strawberry’ with towers of vanilla-white blooms that turn pink and then strawberry red as they mature; Hydrangea panticulata ‘Limelight’ which blooms lime-tinted flowers; Philadelphus ‘Snowbelle’ Mock Orange with double-white fragrant blooms and a dense, rounded form; and a local favorite — Vaccinium corymbosum, ‘Northland’ highbush blueberry — one of the hardiest and most compact, yielding loads of fruit and tolerating even dry, acidic, poor soil.
In addition to the trees and shrubs, visitors will find attractive containers; hanging baskets; new varieties of vegetables, herbs, ornamental grasses and groundcovers; annuals, perennials (many deer-resistant), unusual wildflowers and rock garden plants; plus a garden tag sale and Mother’s Day gifts.
All purchases help the garden club beautify the town and support local organizations.
