Getting older isn't for sissies

They call them the golden years, but aging is not easy and it takes more than grace to stay on your feet.

Melody Matheny Orpen, community health coordinator for Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County will present a talk and offer tested tips on fall prevention, effects of medications and exercise in a program called “Getting Older Isn't for Sissies.” It is presented by Stay at Home in Wilton and takes place Tuesday, Feb. 24, 3 p.m., at the Wilton Senior Center, 180 School Road.

Nearly $30 billion is spent annually on treating older adults for the effects of falls. The chances of falling and of being injured increase as people age. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those over 65 and older. This program is aimed at helping older Wiltonians avoid being one of those statistics.

Next Tuesday’s event is free and refreshments will be served. All in the community are welcome.
