'Deaf'-initely Magic delights Our Lady of Fatima School

To mark the end of National Catholic Schools Week, Our Lady of Fatima's K-8 school welcomed Sam Sandler, a magician who went deaf about six-years ago. Mr. Sandler is the only full-time deaf illusionist in the United States. In his early 30s, a genetic disease called Progressive Hearing Loss, took his hearing and in 2009 his hearing disappeared outright.

According to the National Catholic Schools Educational Association, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States.

The celebrations ran this year from Jan. 25 to Jan. 31.

"Schools typically observe National Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open house and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation."
